All day long you have conversations with yourself. Sometimes you are aware of these conversations and other times, you are not. These conversations are totally normal! Everyone has them.
We call these conversations self-talk. While sometimes your self-talk can feel like chatter, these conversations with yourself can help you tap deeply into your power and potential. Remember our guidelines for writing, editing and revising the stories we tell ourselves? You can use these same guidelines to know whether your self talk is:
*Respecting you *Challenging you *Appreciating you *Empowering you *Supporting you

Quick, without looking at a calendar — what day is it? Are you sure?
If you can't answer confidently, you’re not the only one feeling this way. Even the psychologists who study time perception have felt their days ooze into one another. “I’ve experienced it myself,” says Kevin LaBar, a psychologist and neuroscientist at Duke University. “As this drags on, and as your day becomes very constrained by your limited environment, the days kind of blend together.” If we don’t give our brains something to do, we tend to self-reflect — and the ongoing global health crisis seems like a convenient problem for the mind to mull over. Worrying over the same topic repeatedly “can make it seem like you’ve invested longer, because you’re actually just re-engaging these thought processes on the pandemic,” LaBar says.
One clear way to stop this cycle — and maybe make things feel as if they’re proceeding at a normal pace again — is simply finding something to do. Calling loved ones and going for walks can be great ways to redirect your mind to something else, LaBar says.
And the classic idiom that “time flies when you’re having fun” is backed up by research, explains Annett Schirmer, a brain science researcher at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, via email. “How we perceive time depends on where we place our focus of attention. If we place it on time, time passes more slowly. However, if our attention is captured by something else, time can fly because its passage is less noticed.” For now, LaBar and Schirmer say these explanations for our warped sense of time are still speculation. Schirmer warns that the complex relationship between emotion and time might mean that other factors could crop up in pandemic-related behaviors that researchers haven’t identified yet.

Many people are divided over whether to reopen businesses or whether they should stay closed. Divisiveness is apparent across news, social media and sometimes even in our own homes. It is okay to feel anxious, worried, scared, or perhaps relieved to get back to work. Your feelings are valid, and they may change, even on a day to day basis. Researchers are noting that Americans are experiencing “quarantine fatigue” and thus seeking to return to old routines and normalcy. Through tracking a sample size of cell phones, studies show that Americans are traveling more often and following stay at home orders less (than weeks before).- Washington Post
With what appears to be the “world opening back up” on some level, many debate their choices and what is best for their family. We are constantly bombarded with contradictory information and opinions. Facts vary from channel to channel and it can be hard to process it all. Many of us are speculating what may or may not happen. One thing to remember: there is no timeline you have to follow, do not allow the world to make you feel pressured or rushed. Peer pressure is real. Take whatever time you need.

“Teaching is not a nine to five job. Responsibilities are not confined to the work space, and teachers are not often able to distance themselves from work or student involvement when at home...Teaching, really, is an emotionally taxing profession. Many teachers feel defeated at the end of the day. They didn’t get to the lesson plan that day. But teachers do what they do because of one thing: they love their students and they believe in the power of education. The stress and anxiety that often accompanies teachers' jobs has a significant negative effect on a teacher’s performance and personal life. In fact, about one in 20 teachers has a long-lasting mental health issue.” -ohsonline.com

“We can’t afford to wait for the world to be equal, to start feeling seen. We’re far from it. Time will not allow it. It’s not going to happen with one president, one vote. So you have got to find the tools within yourself to feel visible and to use your voice.” -Michelle Obama

#FBF To earlier this month, when I led an Introduction to Mindfulness (the what, why and how) session via Zoom. We began the session with #mindfulbreathing, Brene Brown’s #permissionslip exercise to move out of our comfort and fear zones and into our learning and growth zones, and an opportunity to connect with each other in small groups to share what we are experiencing. Staying connected and articulating our experience with others is part of the process of expressing and understanding our emotions.

The brain is the most powerful eco-system on the planet. Why? Because its potential is limitless. The more you stretch it, the stronger it gets. Your stretchy brain, in this very moment, has limitless ability to create something new. Like us, neuroscientists are always learning. They are taking risks, exposing themselves to new challenges, and learning new things about the brain all the time. They are making their brains stronger and smarter by studying how the brain grows stronger and smarter-just like you!

Social media makes it easy for us to think that we have an accurate picture of someone's life. We are all handling this pandemic differently and that's ok. Some of us are saying goodbye to old habits and routines, then saying hello to really old ones, and then greeting new ones. All of the above! There is no right or wrong way to navigate a situation you’ve never experienced before. Important to remember to try not to judge ourselves or each other. Staying free of the judgement of others and social comparison is crucial. We are all dealing with this together but traveling separate paths. Let’s stay open minded to that this week.

I don’t try to build trust. I try to create the space, conditions, and opportunities for myself to show up as Kendra, not my title, not my “professional role” but me as me. Sounds straightforward but it’s actually very challenging for us women in professional settings especially within my field of education because there are so many expectations, rules, and norms for how we “should behave” at work. I remind myself that these “professional rules and norms” were not written with me in mind. In this sense it doesn’t make sense for me to follow them. When I do “try to follow them,” I feel out of alignment with my values and thus start feeling the tension and friction. So yes, I “break the old rules.”
